Warren's birthday game is the story; the score almost isn't

Pittsburgh beat Cleveland 27-6 on Sunday, but the number that traveled was 143: Jaylen Warren's rushing yards on his birthday, on 17 carries, with a touchdown. Three outlets covered the game. Two led with Warren. The Guardian buried it inside a live blog that opened on the Ravens losing Lamar Jackson to injury. The wire version is fine. The framing is thinner than the story deserves.

What happened

The Pittsburgh Steelers defeated the Cleveland Browns 27-6 in Week 8, extending their winning streak in this divisional matchup. Jaylen Warren carried 17 times for 143 yards and a touchdown, doing so on his birthday. Yahoo Sports and Pro Football Talk both led with Warren's performance, noting it as his second 100-yard game. The Guardian covered the result inside a rolling live blog of the full NFL Sunday slate, which opened on the Ravens-Bills game and the injuries to Lamar Jackson and backup Tyler Huntley. Three outlets have the result. What separates them is what they thought the result was actually about.

Two outlets led with Warren; one filed him under 'and more'

Yahoo Sports and Pro Football Talk both structured their coverage around Warren's individual performance, with PFT's headline naming the score (27-6), the yardage (143), and the birthday in a single line. Yahoo's framing called it Warren 'hitting the century mark again,' positioning the game as a continuation of a personal trend worth tracking. The Guardian's live blog logged the final score but opened its NFL Sunday coverage on Baltimore, where Lamar Jackson's injury was the dominant story. The Steelers-Browns result appears, but without the Warren angle that made it a story beyond a divisional blowout.

What one side told you that the other didn't

The birthday detail appeared in two of three outlets.

PFT named it in the headline. Yahoo's piece confirmed the performance without making the birthday the frame. The Guardian's live blog omitted it entirely, which is a reasonable editorial call inside a multi-game rolling format, but it means the one detail that made this game memorable to a casual reader was absent from the only outlet covering the full slate. A 27-6 divisional win is routine. A 143-yard birthday game is the thing people repeat at brunch.

Nobody reported what the winning streak number actually is.

PFT noted 'the streak continues for the Steelers and Browns in Pittsburgh' without naming the streak's length. Yahoo and the Guardian did not address it at all. If Pittsburgh has won consecutive games in this matchup, that number belongs in the lede. None of the three outlets supplied it. The streak reference without a number is the kind of sentence that gestures at context while withholding it.
